Storm brews over Greek antiquities
Despite efforts made by the Greek government and by archaeologists, Greece remains a hot spot for the illicit trafficking of antiquities. The recent arrest of 35 individuals involved in an antiquities smuggling ring led to the recovery of thousands of ancient artifacts and coins.
In addition, due to the economic crisis facing the nation, funding for archaeological excavations has been cut dramatically. Such budget reductions have forced the reburial of recently unearthed archaeological finds in the hope of preventing the looting of ancient sites.
